Ericsson and Swedish industry partners launch sovereign Sferical One AI supercomputer

The record took in 49 developments and 8 opinions this week, and 14 of the developments happened before the week began. Taken together they pushed Europe towards less dependence on suppliers, systems and law it does not control, and compute and infrastructure moved most.

The four that moved most

Ericsson and Swedish industry partners launch sovereign Sferical One AI supercomputer

Compute and infrastructure, 15 October, Verified. Ericsson and partners AstraZeneca, Saab, SEB, Wallenberg Investments and SKF formally launched Sferical One, a sovereign AI supercomputer in Stockholm built on Nvidia DGX GB300 systems, giving the Swedish consortium 1,152 GPUs of dedicated compute capacity.

What it does not test. It does not show the supercomputer winning work beyond its founding members or evidence of the consortium's running costs.

France's CANUT names Twake.ai sole sovereign digital workplace alternative

Compute and infrastructure, 8 October, Verified. France's CANUT procurement agency named the LINAGORA-Docaposte consortium's Twake.ai platform sole reference sovereign digital workplace for public bodies, an alternative to Microsoft 365 for local authorities, housing bodies and schools.

What it does not test. The framework award does not disclose its financial value, duration, or how many public bodies will actually adopt Twake.ai.

Rheinmetall and MSC win auction for Romania's Mangalia shipyard

Industry, investment and R&D, 19 October, Verified. Rheinmetall and Switzerland's MSC won an auction to buy Romania's Mangalia shipyard for EUR 138 million. They plan a dual use site to build four Romanian navy vessels and expand military shipbuilding in south eastern Europe.

What it does not test. It does not establish that the acquisition, expected to close in a few weeks, has formally completed.

EIB lends EUR 150 million to Fugro to expand ocean survey vessel fleet

Industry, investment and R&D, 14 October, Verified. The European Investment Bank signed a EUR 150 million loan with Dutch geo-data firm Fugro. The money funds a second-generation fleet of up to 25 uncrewed surface vessels that survey subsea cables and offshore wind sites.

What it does not test. It does not establish that the loan has been disbursed or that the vessel fleet is yet operating at scale.

Coming up next week

The calendar has the month, the quarter and the year ahead.

The archive of earlier months also gained 420 items this week.

Every item is drafted by an AI system from the source it cites, graded Verified (the primary document was read at the passage) or Reported (it rests on a named secondary source), and states what it does not test. Each item's page says whether the editor read it before publication, and corrections are made in the open. The monthly issue goes out at the end of each month.
