AWS launches AWS European Sovereign Cloud, an EU-only region run from Germany

AWS launched the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a legally separate EU region in Brandenburg run exclusively by EU residents, backed by over EUR 7.8 billion of planned German investment and new Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Verified About Amazon press release, 15 January 2026

What it does not test. This does not establish that the region is immune from US legal reach such as the CLOUD Act, only that AWS has restructured its corporate and staffing model.

How this item counts. No movement: no answer to who owns, who operates, whose law governs or who made the parts changes. Weight 0. US-owned under US law: EU staff at the controls changes no answer Europe can rely on; the sovereign label is the critique, not the finding. European Sovereignty Index
